Dental Sealants
The price of dental sealants is $20.00
Deep grooves, pits and fissures on the chewing surfaces of premolars and molars can be treated with the use of a thin plastic sealant or coating. Dental decay usually starts within these deep grooves. In fact, this is where seventy-five percent of dental decay is found.
When teeth have these conditions, it is difficult to clean them, and they decay easily. The use of the sealant will protect the tooth by creating a surface that is smooth and free of grooves, and therefore quite easy to keep clean. When you go to the dentist for your regular visit, he or she will check your sealant to be sure it has not become chipped or worn. Normally, sealants will give years of service.
Reasons to have dental sealants:
- Children and teenagers – As soon as the six-year molars (the first permanent back teeth) appear or any time throughout the cavity prone years of 6-16.
- Adults– Tooth surfaces without decay that have deep grooves or depressions.
- Baby teeth– Occasionally done if teeth have deep grooves or depressions and child is cavity prone.
The purpose of dental sealants:
- Children and teenagers - The moment the six year molar appear (the first permanent teeth in the back) or any period during the ages of 6 to 16 when cavities usually occur.
- Adults - Describes tooth surfaces that do not exhibit decay and do not have deep depressions and/or grooves.
- Baby Teeth - Sealants may be used on baby teeth if they have deep depressions or grooves or if the child is particularly prone to cavities.
What are involved in dental sealants?
It just takes about two minutes a tooth to apply sealants. This is a job that can be done by a dental hygienist. Cotton is placed around the teeth that will be sealed. This keeps them dry once they have been completely cleaned. To help the sealant in bonding to the teeth, a unique solution will be placed on the surface of the enamel. Then your teeth will be rinsed and dried. Deep grooves and depressions on the surface of the enamel are filled with the sealant material, which is painted on very carefully. These materials may be hardened in two ways, either with an artificial light, or naturally. It depends on the type of sealant that is used.
You can keep your new sealants strong and effective by exercising good oral hygiene, maintaining a balanced diet, and seeing your dentist on a regular basis.
